Go
Fish Hits the Stage:
Go
Fish in the theater!!
Go fish, has been made into a stage production, here is
an interview with the director Alex Whitham......
Tea,
toenails and true love
London
based Australian theatre company Zip Antics (www.zipanticstheatre.co.uk)
will make their UK debut with the award winning play Go
Fish, originally a film written by Guinevere Turner and
Rose Troche. (Now creatively involved in the smash hit
The L Word)
Go
Fish has had three sell-out seasons in Australia, and
UK audiences are promised a treat as Go Fish comes to
a shore near you. Zip Antics has cast its net wide and
caught six gorgeous and funky women from London who to
take on the roles in this highly stylized physical play.
What
defines a lesbian? Is it how you dress? Who you sleep
with? The length of your hair? What kind of tea you drink?
Everybody has an opinion, it seems. This is one of the
things that interested theatre Director Alex Whitham,
in Go Fish.
‘Go Fish first grabbed me because it was one of
the few dyke flicks that I have seen that dared to explore,
challenge and redefine the way lesbians are portrayed
in film. Go Fish is a love story, but, unlike many tales
of Sapphic love, the romance is not an isolated adventure
in a heterosexual context.’
Zip
Antics have turned this cult film into a dynamic stage
presentation. It is the only theatre company in the world
to have done so. Having originally adapted the show in
Australia nearly over six years ago, the company have
again adapted it to suit an English audience. Zip Antics
will be debuting in the UK throughout May 2005.
Co-producer
of Go Fish Dan Clarke comments
‘It will be a busy month for our company. We will
be presenting
The Fatboy, (another Aussie gay play) at The Nuffield
in Southampton, Go Fish in Brighton, and then Go Fish
at The Nuffield…it is all happening at once…exciting
stuff….but it has taken a year or so for company
members to settle in London’
And
after such a successful following in Australia why has
Zip Antics relocated to the UK.
‘We wanted our work to be seen by more people….members
of the company relocated at different times over the last
couple of years…and we wanted to continue doing
what we did at home….create daring theatre that
often explores a queer perspective’
